BarTender Automation and Enterprise Automation with COMMANDER Barcode label software

Commander is a software utility, provided with both the automation editions of BarTender. This enables you to perform automatic printing using BarTender in situations where it is not convenient or possible to perform automation using ActiveX or command lines. Commander can be run as an application or as a Windows service.

When a system needs to print, it simply performs a triggering action, such as placing a file in a location of your choosing on the network, transmitting an e-mail, sending data via RS-232 (a serial port). Commander detects the arrival or occurrence of these “triggers” and then “wakes up” BarTender so it can merge your data into the label design and automatically print your labels. Our experienced team is able to provide upgrades, consultancy and training for both BarTender and Commander.

Example of uses for BarTender Automation

An example of how to make use of BarTender with Commander, Barcode Labels assisted an Australian University to automate the printing of Barcoded Assignment Labels. As soon as a Lecturer has entered Assignment details a batch file of Student ID’s is created and detected by Commander which starts up a BarTender process to print off Barcoded University Address Labels. These labels are then mailed out to off-site students for their application to their Assignments and then mailed back to the University. The Assignment Barcode label is then scanned the moment they are removed from Australia Post Mail Bags upon delivery to the University and updated as having been receipted.

The Commander module can also be used to monitor for the arrival of data files from Legacy Order Entry/ERP Systems/incoming emails and then automatically, using scripting tools such as Python, PERL to retrieve contents and insert into a Database, such as a Warehouse Management System. We have setup as part of a comprehensive WMS as many as 40 concurrent Commander Triggers and many of these did not involve any Label printing.

Using BarTender label software with Weighing Scales

Two basic methods supported: User-initiated where on-screen scale display provides a live display of the measured weight on your data entry forms, which in turn sources data to the text and/or Barcode fields to be printed.
Automatic, Scale-Initiated Print Jobs where system automatically prints when a stable weight is received from a scale. Requires use of Commander connected either by a Serial Port or TCP/IP socket trigger to initate print jobs without User intervention.
